On the quest for a better, healthier you, one thing that people often overlook is their environment. Of course, one of the key pieces of that environment is our own home. Your home can have a tremendous impact on your mental state. If your home is constantly in a state of disarray, that can keep your mind from being at ease. An important part of our home is of course where we sleep. An uncomfortable, crickety old bed can keep us up at night tossing and turning. If there is one piece of furniture you are going to invest some money in, make it your bed.

Having recently purchased a new bed myself, I did some research into it and thought it would be worthwhile to share with you.

If you are someone that tends to move around a lot during the night, or if your significant other does so, you might want to consider a king size bed. This will give you the maximum amount of space to help prevent you from keeping one another up at night. Of course you need to make sure that you have enough space in your bedroom for one. If not, this may not even be an option. Do not make the mistake one of my friends did and buy a king size bed without first measuring your bedroom. They now have barely any space on either side of their bed between the bed and the wall.

I recommend shopping around a good bit to get a feel for what you like. Pick up some furniture or home design magazines. Go to a few local furniture stores and browse around. You can also find a lot of modern furniture websites like this one which you can look through. Being that a bed is not something people replace often, the last thing you want to do is buy something you are unhappy with. You are probably going to be looking at it for the next 5 to 8 years, or longer.

Obviously, unless you are in the market for a whole new bedroom suite, you are going to want to pick something that matches the current décor of your bedroom. Although you can find bed frames made of other materials, such as leather, the most common frames are made of either wood or metal. If you choose wood, then from there you will find many different types of wood to choose from. Hard woods, soft woods, cherry wood, oak, and more.

As far as I’m concerned though, the most important thing in choosing a new bed for your home is the mattress. The mattress, and to some degree box spring, is of course, what is going to determine the comfort level for your bed. This is where nothing can really top going into a few furniture stores and testing them out. There are so many options out there these days. Do you prefer a harder surface to sleep on? Do you want a mattress that you sink right into? Again, if you or your mate move around a lot at night, there are mattresses that do not transfer this movement throughout the mattress. Your significant other can be tossing and turning, and you will not feel a thing throughout the night. I did this in my workout routine the past two weeks. Holy crap. The next day I felt like I couldn’t lift my arms.

Don’t be a hero with this one. Go light on the weights. You have a lot of reps left after that first set.

The importance of a good breakfast cannot be overstated. What you eat in the morning is the fuel you put in your body to get you through the day. It provides energy, vitamins, protein, and other nutrients that you need to keep you going all day long.  It is important to understand what defines a good breakfast. A large sugary coffee and a few doughnuts might sound delicious, but your sugar crash will probably occur mid-morning, and you’ll find yourself hungry and listless. I always make sure my kitchen and refrigerator are stocked with what I need to prepare a healthy breakfast. It keeps me from taking less healthy shortcuts.

Your cooking skill should not impact your ability to eat a healthy breakfast in the morning. Even if you do not know how to make French toast (You might be surprised. Look how easy it is), you can still prepare a healthy morning meal. The cornerstone of a healthy and productive breakfast is protein. Most people find protein in things such as eggs. Whether you eat them scrambled, boiled, or poached, incorporating an egg into your breakfast routine is a great way to get the protein you need and keep your blood sugar and cholesterol balanced. Eggs are low in calories, high in good fats and low in bad fats. Considered a power food by many diet plans and nutritionists, you can get creative with how to eat an egg. Fry an egg and eat it on a piece of whole grain toast. Scramble a couple of eggs with your favorite veggies. If you need to eat on the run, keep a few hard boiled eggs in the fridge so you can grab one on your way out the door.

Breakfast is a good time to eat some whole grains and fruits as well. Try some toast or multi grain pancakes to get some fiber into your early morning diet. Fruits are high in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. A small bowl of berries will give you the sweetness you may crave at breakfast time, while providing you with extra tools to fight against cancer, heart disease, and other illnesses. Have a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice or a grapefruit to take advantage of the properties in citrus that contribute to great blood circulation.

The importance of a good breakfast is easy to understand. The first meal of your day should give you energy and a whole plate or bowl full of healthy nutrients. If you are going to skip a meal throughout the day, make sure it isn’t breakfast. If it means getting up a little earlier, do it. Your body, your diet, and your mental health will thank you.
